FAQs

Why did you become a writer?

When I was a kid I hated writing! I always struggled with coming up with ideas and being creative. I also didn’t like following any rules. But when I got to college, I really enjoyed writing research papers– because I got to choose the topics and could turn in the final product. As an adult, I came across writing for children! And since I feel like a 12-year-old on the inside, it seemed like the perfect fit!

What kinds of books do you like to read?

I’ve always been a big reader. As a kid some of my favorites included the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M Montgomery, the American Girl series, Goosebumps by R.L. Stine, and A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett, among others. As I got older, I read anything by John Grisham, Amy Tan and Isabel Allende. Now, I read across all genres and of course lots and lots and lots of kids books! (Which aren’t just for kids!) Some of my favorite kids authors now are Rajani LaRocca, Nell Cross Beckerman, Ruth Behar, Meg Medina, Jason Reynolds, David Bowles, Julie Fogliano, Margarita Engle and Laurie Keller, among others!

Where do you get your ideas?

I have a really hard time making stuff up! So most of my story ideas come from my experiences as a kid, or even recently! I like to tell stories about real places, real people and things that people can do! Story ideas are all around.

What do you like to do for fun?

I have lots of interests! But I like to travel, read, watch tv, go to museums, do arts & crafts and spend time with my family and friends.
